September 18, 2026 · By Kathleen WoodsChoosing the right rug size
The single most common mistake we see in living rooms is a rug that's too small. It makes furniture look like it's floating and shrinks the whole room.
Our rule: in a living room, at least the front legs of every seating piece should sit on the rug. In a dining room, the rug should extend 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on it when pulled out.
For most Fishers great rooms, that means an 8×10 or 9×12. When in doubt, tape the outline on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a few days.

Indiana's humid summers and dry winters are tough on finishes. Tile that hides water spots and wears gracefully saves you cleaning time for years.
Our favorites: handmade-look zellige, honed limestone-look porcelain, small hex mosaics on shower floors for grip, and matte finishes in mid-tone colors.
Avoid very dark polished floors in a busy family bath — they show every footprint and drop of water.

A cohesive home doesn't mean painting every room the same color. It means choosing a family of colors that share undertones.
Start with a primary neutral for halls and open areas, then pick two or three supporting colors for bedrooms and a single accent for doors or cabinetry.
Always test samples on at least two walls and look at them morning, afternoon and evening before committing.

Put your desk perpendicular to a window to avoid glare and backlighting on video calls.
Layer lighting: a ceiling fixture, a task lamp and a soft light behind you. Add a rug and drapery to soften echo.
Closed storage keeps paperwork out of sight so the room can double as a guest space.

Leave 42 inches of clearance around an island, 48 if two people cook together.
Allow 24 inches of counter length per stool and pick stools with backs if the island is used for homework or meals.
Plan outlets, a trash pull-out and a place for cookbooks early — these are the details owners mention most after move-in.
